She was raised in Barcelona and has been called an "atypical pop star" due to her variety of musical styles. After being captivated by Spanish folk music as a child of 13she enrolled in musicology at the Catalonia College of Music while performing in bars and weddings. She finished her studies with distinction due to her collaborative cover album with Raul Refree in Los Angeles (2017) and her Baccalaureate-related project El Mal Querer (2018). Blending flamenco and hip hop and pop music the album produced "Malamente" (single) as well as "Pienso in tu Mira" (single). Both songs sold out and have received a hefty amount of critical acclaim. El Mal Querer was the first artist to bring Rosalia on the international stage. The third studio album she released, Motomami (2022) brought reggaeton an innovative sound that was breaking away from the previous flamenco style. Its songs "La Fama" and "Saoko", caught the attention of international fans and was the top-rated album by Metacritic. Rosalia has scored ten number one songs throughout her career in her home country. It's the most for an artist hailing from the region. She also has won two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards (including two Album of the Year nominations) as well as four MTV Video Music Awards, an MTV Europe Music Award, three UK Music Video Awards and two Premio Ruido awards, among other things. Billboard presented her with the Rising Star Award, in 2019 for "changing the sound today's mainstream songs by introducing her unique flamenco pop". 18 years ago, she was also the first singer from a Spanish group to be recognized for the Best New Artist at the Grammys.
