Rauw Alejandro

In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the most-streamed song in just six months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton but it also attracted attention towards Latin music more generally. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs in Spanish mainly, and four others in 2016. At the peak of Despacito's commercial success in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly in Spanish reached within the top 100. This number rose to 41 in 2020. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began collaborating with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team on MIA (2018), while Madonna and Maluma were on the same track in Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. The year 2000 saw a number of reggaeton stars were complaining about the genre's direction toward the mainstream, but a new generation including Rauw Alejandro wanted to keep reggaeton evolving. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music, and various other forms.
